Vegan Buddha Bowl

Origin: In temples, monks once walked barefoot at dawn, carrying a single bowl.
Whatever the village offered — rice, curry, vegetables, sometimes even meat — was accepted with gratitude.
It was never curated, never arranged, never photographed. The bowl was a lesson, not a recipe: take what comes, with grace.

Centuries later, in cafés of glass and glow, that image was reborn. Grains, greens, and bright vegetables were placed in perfect circles — a quiet rebellion against fast food and noise. The name gave it gravity. The myth gave it soul.

But this Buddha Bowl is not from Bodh Gaya or Kyoto or Lhasa. It is a symbol — of longing, of wellness, of balance reimagined through Western eyes.

Still, something true lingers in the gesture: one bowl, held with two hands, meant to nourish without harm.

Ingredients

1 cup cooked quinoa or other grain

1/2 cup shredded carrots

1/4 cup garbanzo beans or other protein

1/2 cup shredded cabbage

1/2 cup sliced tomatoes

1/2 cup sliced cucumber

1 fresh radish, sliced

1 teaspoon sesame seeds or poppy seeds

Handful of arugula

Lemon slices

Dressing

1/4 cup tahini

2 tablespoons lemon juice

2 cloves garlic, crushed

2 tablespoons maple syrup

1 tablespoon sesame oil

1 tablespoon tamari sauce

1 tablespoon water (add more if needed, up to 1/3 cup)

How The Alchemy Happens


Divide ingredients into 2 bowls and arrange to your liking.

For the Dressing:

Add tahini to a food processor bowl and process for about 2 minutes.

Add the remaining ingredients and pulse until combined and smooth.

Drizzle the dressing over your Buddha bowls, squeeze fresh lemon juice on top, and enjoy.

Best served fresh, with gratitude and quiet attention.
